Hanky Panky’s Brand-New Prints for June 2013

The final delivery of Summer 2013 features bold, saturated prints, which will transition into the upcoming Fall season beautifully. Prints include Flame, a bold fuchsia print inspired by Italian knitwear, Bird of Paradise, a graphic, abstracted feather print in a saturated jewel tone palette, and Python, a neutral animal print in soft jersey for daywear and sleep.

I discovered a huge trend among my own local shops for bold neons, floral prints, and of course plenty of Hanky Panky merchandise in lovely brights and pastels. While enjoying the campus and traveling around town I became inspired by the color of Spring and how it was reflected in the trends. I captured a few shots of the beautiful University of Georgia campus as well as some Hanky Panky looks spotted around town.

Hanky Panky lingerie is happiest when hand-washed and hung to dry.

Ask Hanky Panky:
Why shouldn’t  I machine wash and dry my Hanky Panky lingerie?

Our Signature Lace waistband and trim laces are made from a nylon-spandex blend. The spandex fibers give our panties their amazing stretch and recovery, helping them to hug your curves perfectly, without cutting in or binding. While spandex is truly a “miracle fiber” (it can stretch to 500x its length and still snap back to its original dimensions), it is somewhat fragile.

Because lace has such an open and delicate construction, the spandex fibers are an integral part of the fabric structure. When the spandex eventually wears out, it will render the lace  unstable.

At the molecular level, the polymer chains that make up spandex fiber look like jumbled up spaghetti. When the fiber is stretched, the polymer chains straighten out. When it is released, the polymer chains snap back to their natural jumbled spaghetti-like state.

The molecular bonds that keep these chains together are relatively strong. However, heat (from hot water or machine drying) and alkaline environments (from caustic detergents and bleaches) cause these bonds to break, leaving the chains shorter, and the fiber loses its elasticity. Eventually the chains will become so short that the integrity of the fiber is irreparably compromised and loses all recovery.

This is why we emphatically suggest that you never use harsh detergents or bleach (which are alkaline). Our specially formulated lingerie wash is pH neutral and was created to gently clean stretch fibers. The extreme heat and agitation of machine drying is also deadly to stretch fibers.

Hanky Panky Lingerie Wash

Best practice is to hand wash in cool water with our lingerie wash, rinse twice to ensure removal of all detergent and lay flat or hang to dry. This will give your panties a reasonably long life.

We recognize that this is more time than some people are willing to dedicate to caring for their underthings. If you must machine wash, please use the gentle cycle, a mild, pH neutral detergent, cool water, and protect your lingerie from snags and undue stress by placing it in a wash bag. After the cycle is completed, Please hang or lay flat to dry. Never put your Hanky Panky lingerie in the dryer. Machine drying will wear out your lingerie very quickly and will eventually destroy it.

It’s about to officially be summer for everyone, especially college students like myself. We’ve been struggling to hang on to our high GPAs and keep our focus for the past few weeks in order to get through final exams, but we are finally coming to the end! Whether you have already finished your exams or are still on the final leg of your semester, it’s inevitable that summer has been slowly seeping through the cracks of spring.

After taking a look at Hanky Panky’s new summer collection and pictures of the beach on Pinterest, I instantly started to feel warmer. Hanky Panky’s new neon colors and summer collection in particular are full of fresh new colors and looks that quickly took me to fond memories of warm beach parties and enjoying cool, poolside smoothies.

Hanky Panky Design Intern Tessa with her award-winning design at the Femmy Gala.

The process began many months before I even saw the lavender walls of the Hanky Panky headquarters, back in the fall of my seventh semester at The Fashion Institute of Technology, where I am finishing up my Bachelors Degree as an intimate apparel student. I was excited that Hanky Panky was a participating company on the extensive list of names, where I could complete my 120 hour mandatory internship.

After a few nervous interviews, I was happy to be accepted as the new Hanky Panky design intern for Spring 2013. I was greeted on my first day with my own desk and my own purple Hanky Panky cup, that let me now I was a part of the team. Everyone from the sewers, the marketing team, the graphic designers and even the owners of the company were so welcoming, that I began to look forward to coming in to intern more so than going to my classes.

Everything about the working environment seemed inviting; the large open rooms allowed for each department to have its own space but never be cut off from one another, the large windows let in all the light and sun that I never imagined an office building would have, and the abundance of fabric and sewing supplies made me happy and comfortable to actually get to work with the materials of my trade.

Because Hanky Panky produces domestically, I was granted the unique experience of working alongside the pattern maker, cutters, and sewers in addition to just designing. This experience is invaluable to me, because most other companies produce overseas and never get to actually watch every step of their product being created.

While working with various members of the design and production team, I was presented with many different tasks—but never once was I asked to get coffee. At first I was surprised that this traditionally-accepted intern errand was never asked of me, but as I got to know the designers, I understood why. The two talented women responsible for creating the many successful lines at Hanky Panky were everything I never expected at an internship. They were patient and always took time to explain things to me, they were concerned and never even thought twice about giving me days off when I needed more time for school, and they were generous in providing me with a well-rounded experience that even included my privileged inclusion in their weekly design meetings.

In addition to observing design meetings, some of my other responsibilities included keeping the design boards up to date with flat sketches (which I am so glad are hand-drawn instead of computer-created), scanning in new lace prints and organizing their binders, cutting swatches for different swatch cards, cutting pattern pieces for garment samples, and choosing thread and trim colors to go with new thong patterns. My greatest triumph though, was the creation of a master collection of bow binders in which every bow that could be found is contained and thoroughly organized for easy reference.

Overall, my internship experience as a Hanky Panky design intern has not only taught me skills that I will use for the rest of my life, but also that I have the ability to succeed in this sometimes ruthless profession. My last few days here are bittersweet because unfortunately there are no available permanent positions for which I can apply, but I will always be grateful to every member of the Hanky Panky team for making me feel confident and empowered to go forth into the world of design and start my career.

I know we all have quirks and odd behaviors from time to time, some more than others. For me, I happen to have an issue with the way fabric seams feel and also when they shift out of place. It could be anything from the seams on my clothes feeling uncomfortable (I sleep with my shirts and socks inside out every night) to something silly like the seams on the fitted bed sheet being uneven (I remake the bed a few times every night before we go to sleep). OCD much?

But what really stressed me out the most was my thong underwear. I can’t even begin to tell you how unnerving and distracting it was for me throughout the day to feel my underwear shift/bunch/twist and not be able to do anything about it, especially while sitting at my desk surrounded by coworkers. It was maddening, but in an effort to avoid the dreaded visible panty line, I wore thongs. The brands didn’t matter because I tried a lot of them and all of their seams bothered me.

One day, I finally had enough. I searched the web using the keywords “comfortable thongs” and immediately the search results were flooded with Hanky Panky references. From message board discussions to customer reviews, everyone who tried Hanky Panky loved them and never looked back.

I had to try them! I bought some of the Original Rise Thongs and wore my first pair the next day. Well, something strange and unfamiliar happened. For the first time in so many, many years, my thong underwear went unnoticed. In fact, the only time I thought about my underwear was when I made a trip to the ladies room and saw that flash of bright lacy color. In other words, no more seams tugging, shifting, or bunching!

I bought several more pairs right away because Hanky Panky, you don’t even know how much your underwear has helped someone like me. I could cry because I feel like I got a part of my life back. The underwear issue was the most problematic for me concerning my OCD and now that I don’t have to worry about uncomfortable thongs anymore, I can work on resolving the other facets of this disorder. One step at a time, right? Thank you Hanky Panky for being that first step! You really do make the best thongs in the world!
