One of my favorite trends for Spring/Summer 2011 is bright, neon colors. However, this trend can be tough to wear without looking like you’re stuck in 1989. Unless you’re going to a rave, under the age of 12, or work in a field where safety is important, I would advise against head-to-toe neon clothing.
That said, neons can be worn in a tasteful, but still playful way. I particularly like the way Christopher Kane’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection juxtaposed shockingly bright colors with airy laces, laser-cut fabrics and ladylike silhouettes. The effect is chic and fresh, without looking campy or kitschy.
This trend seems most successful when a neon piece is worn as an accent with a more sedate outfit. A neon handbag, belt or shoes can be a great way to update a classic outfit.
Another fabulous way to add neon to your wardrobe is with a bright lace camisole or bandeau worn under a white or heather grey T-shirt or tank top. Let the lace peek out of a low neckline or let the lacy hem show below your t-shirt hem. And, of course, you can wear a lace thong or boyshort in a matching or coordinating color.
Remember to have fun with it. Color is an instant mood-lifter and a great way to enjoy the warmer weather!
