Lingerie Influencers

Throughout history, there have been influencers who transformed the world and changed the way that people live their lives, from the most famous, to the ones who stayed away from the spotlight. In the lingerie world, there have been key influencers who sought not to create what women “wanted” as much as what women “needed.” These women created products to enhance women’s bodies, minds and self-confidence.

One of these was Heiress Mary Phelps Jacobs, who on November 3, 1914 was granted a patent for her “backless brassiere” which she had originally created from silk handkerchiefs while getting ready for a party. While it was certainly not the first brassiere or breast-supporting undergarment, it filled a unique void. She later sold the design to the Warner Brothers Corset Company.

66 years later, on November 3, 1980, Hanky Panky showed designer (and co-founder) Gale Epstein’s  Spring 1981 line, which featured her unique bralettes and panties, also made from re-purposed embroidered handkerchiefs.
