On Thursday, May 3rd, the 30th Annual Gloria Awards were held at the historic NYC landmark, ‘Capitale’ on the Lower East Side. This year’s theme was #OurVoicesOurTime, which honored women of color who stand at the forefront of political, artistic, and social grassroots movements within their communities.
In the clutter of the 24-hour news cycle, the voices of marginalized people tend to get overshadowed, and certain voices are privileged over others. The Ms. Foundation for Women amplifies those unheard voices. It was incredible to share air with a ballroom full of people helping to make a real difference in the lives of so many. The night’s group of powerhouse nominees included Marley Diaz, founder of #1000BlackGirlBooks, Elaine Welteroth, former Editor-in-Chief of Teen Vogue, Joanne Smith, Executive Director of Girls for Gender Equality, Monica Simpson, Executive Director of SisterSong, Shannan Reaze, Executive Director of Atlanta Jobs with Justice, and Ava DuVernay, Academy Award-Nominated Director.
The night reignited the flame that had become a low sizzle for many of us over the past year. It also gave us the opportunity to bond with some of the wonderful women that make up the Hanky Panky team. We not only listened to the amazing guest speakers, but started our own discussions about women, race and equality, all over delicious bites of food and refreshing sips of wine. Not to mention, watching the Resistance Revival Chorus sing live was extremely inspiring!
We were proud to represent the Hanky Panky organization, which is a longtime sponsor of both the Ms. Foundation for Women and the Gloria Awards. A magical, inspiring night was had by all!
