Hanky Panky’s Responsibly-Grown Supima® Cotton With a Conscience® collection is a great start, but there’s more work to be done.
If you educate yourself to the negative effects of “modern” farming, it can really get you down.
Yet it’s not too late for us to become aware and make necessary changes for the health of our planet and ultimately our own health. For the past 10 years, Hanky Panky has offered responsibly-grown SUPIMA® cotton lingerie, our Cotton with a Conscience® collection. In 2017, we joined 35 other apparel manufacturers and brands in pledging to shift the balance of our cotton use to 100% responsibly-grown, sustainable cotton by 2025, including all cotton linings and sleepwear.
This pledge – an initiative of the Prince of Wales’ International Sustainability Unit called the Sustainable Cotton Communiqué – will help alleviate the environmental and social costs that are too often associated with cotton production, including the overuse of pesticides, the release of greenhouse gases, the depletion of local water sources and rising costs of production by scaling up demand.
You can read the full communiqué (PDF), which outlines our collective goals to:
- Increase the income of smallholder farmers;
- Eliminate highly hazardous pesticides, and eliminate or reduce the amount of pesticides and synthetic fertilizer used;
- Reduce water use and improve water quality; and
- Improve soil health, including positive carbon impacts as a result of more sustainable practices.
We’re proud to be a leader in the transition to a more responsible apparel industry. Learn more about our sustainability initiatives here.
